What is Myofascial Release?

The John F. Barnes' approach to Myofascial Release is one of the most important therapies in health care right now and for the future. This hands on therapy addresses the whole being as one energetic, physical and emotional body with it's own innate intelligence to feel and heal, finding resonance within and without.

Addressing health and wellness issues through the connective tissue, or fascia, eliminates pain, increases range of motion, and helps your body find balance. The fascia is the layer of connective tissue found directly beneath the skin, which then runs through the body in a three dimensional web without beginning or end from head to toe. It surrounds every muscle, organ and bone all the way down to the cellular level. Trauma, thwarted inflammatory responses, postural issues, repetitive motion or surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, producing pain and other dis-ease and dysfunction. These restrictions do not show up in any of the standard medical tests.

The John Barnes' Approach to Myofascial Release (MFR) encompasses hands-on technique, Unwinding, Rebounding and self care. With hands-on, gentle sustained pressure is directed into the fascia allowing for increased circulation through areas of tissue density providing relief from symptoms. It is deeply profound work that gets to the very root of the issues you are experiencing. These techniques safely and gently treat the entire myofascial mind/body complex, alleviating pressure in the restricted myofascial system that causes the symptoms and freeing your body to regulate more efficiently and find homeostasis.

Each MFR session is performed directly on skin without oils or creams. This allows for accurate detection of fascial restrictions followed by an appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia. To enhance your comfort during treatment and because there can be movement, a two piece bathing suit or sports bra and shorts can be worn. This also assists in assessment of your individual posture and body positioning, helping us to find areas you may not be feeling discomfort but are contributing to your areas of concern. Commitment to a series of sessions is often necessary to reach permanent changes as we habitually revert back to what is familiar. Making MFR a part of your lifestyle is a powerful tool for facing all of life's challenges and changes with more grace and ease.
